THE SECOND (2022)
The Second is an artistic tribute to my twenty-three-year-old sister who fell victim to gun violence, Johnnai Owens. I created two-dimensional artworks of various materials and mediums explores the power that gun violence has on the memories I have of my sister. To supplement my artistic research, I investigated the impacts of loss on memory, how art therapy is critical in the healing process, and the ways grieving is impacted by gun violence in my Black community. This project demonstrated the reflection entailing the intersections of art in its substantial survival against time, the inspiration of black contemporary realism art, and how experience, loss, life, and death can be felt through visual representation in the memorial of my sister.
